Is the Proxmox Datacenter Manager subscription message a paywall?
Proxmox Datacenter Manager Subscription Notice: A Paywall?. Learn Storage, Backup, and Automation with practical Proxmox steps.
Overview
It is the Datacenter Manager subscription notice, and it does not lock you out.
The message appears after updating and can look alarming at first glance. Several users point out that the wording makes it sound as if access is blocked unless you pay, yet everything keeps working. You can click “Continue” and still see and manage your nodes and PBS instance. It behaves much like the familiar Proxmox “no subscription” notice on individual nodes.
The confusion is mostly about enterprise repository access. Proxmox Datacenter Manager does not require every node to be licensed; enterprise repository access follows a coverage rule instead. The clarification users repeat most is that roughly 80% of nodes must have at least a basic subscription to enable enterprise repository access for PDM. Community subscriptions do not count toward that percentage.
If you do not meet that threshold, you are limited to non-enterprise repositories and the software itself continues to function. Some people read the dialog as a new licensing restriction or a feature lock tied to node count, which is why the distinction matters.
Many also feel the wording could be clearer. One suggestion is to mention “enterprise subscription” explicitly in the dialog so it doesn't look like a sudden paywall.
Proxmox has handled the "no subscription" notice on individual PVE nodes the same way for years. It's a nag screen tied to which package repository you pull updates from (enterprise vs. no-subscription), and the software's features stay available either way. Datacenter Manager extends the same logic to a fleet-wide view, so the messaging can feel new even though the underlying licensing model hasn't fundamentally changed.
If you're running a homelab or small cluster entirely on the no-subscription repository, you'll see this message regardless of node count. In your case it has nothing to do with a percentage threshold: the 80% rule only matters once you have a mix of subscribed and unsubscribed nodes and want to know whether the cluster as a whole qualifies for enterprise repo access through Datacenter Manager. Running 100% no-subscription nodes is a supported, common configuration, and the message is reminding you that enterprise features and repos aren't part of that setup.
Nothing is blocked. The dialog is a reminder about enterprise repo eligibility and places no limit on how you use Datacenter Manager.
